I will admit it…I like eating…
I like eating even though in a lot of ways it is killing me…
I like to eat highly processed foods even though there is really nothing “good” about them at all.
I like to eat pasta and potatoes and bread and foods high in carbs.
I like eating potato chips, nacho chips, almost any kind of chip.
I like to eat salty snacks and sweet snacks and snacks that really should be considered meals because I eat so much of them.
On occasion, I also like eating vegetables and fruits and things that are “good” for me, but with all the pesticides and genetic “enhancements” and preservatives, who knows just how “good” they are.
Will you join me as I go on a short journey through the foods that aren’t really foods?
Where to begin?
There are so many things out there masquerading as food these days that it is hard to know where to begin.
Let me start by saying, I don’t want to seem like a downer, but food, in a lot of ways, has control over my life, and it’s killing me.
If you are reading this, then chances are that food has control over your life, too.
I think of it as a form of “assisted suicide” because I know these things are killing me and I still willingly partake of them. No one forces me to open up a bag of potato chips. No one forces me to eat them. No one forces me to keep eating until there is nothing left in the bag except crumbs.
Or do they?
Studies don’t lie, do they?
In a study that was published in The Journal of Nutrition by the title of Salt Promotes Passive Overconsumption of Dietary Fat in Humans, it was made evident that added salt actually makes us want to eat more in general.
The conclusion drawn from the study was this: “The results suggest that salt promotes passive overconsumption of energy in adults and that salt may override fat-mediated satiation in individuals who are sensitive to the taste of fat.”
In fact, “salt increased food and energy intakes by 11%, independent of fat concentration.”
Who would have thought that salt was the culprit?
All I know for sure is that if there is salt and carbs together—I want to eat it!
So, what can I eat?
It is hard to know what to think about food or which ones to eat.
I am eating a pint of blueberries right now. Yes, I said a pint.
I pop one in my mouth, type a paragraph and then throw a few more into my mouth. I’m hungry. Blueberries are “supposed” to be “good” for you. A pint of them is only 180 calories. That’s fewer calories than 20 potato chips. It is certainly fewer calories than a whole bag of chips.
Still, I hunger for the salty chips…
I long for the sugar…
I long for the day when I can more easily make better choices for my health…
