My Plate is it any good for a type 2 diabetic?

During my diabetes education class this week, we talked about using My Plate which is a government website that has the latest health findings to help people know what to eat and how much. Further down this page, I have included a link to the very simple widget to get started on your calorie needs for weight loss.my plate

I didn’t have a lot of time to explore the site, but some things that are included are my plate plan, my plate app, as well as quizzes, articles, and more.

There are a lot of resources on the site including a host of recipes. Here is one that I am going to try: 5 A Day Salad.

The site also includes recipe videos, resources, and more.

I always figure it is better to have more than enough information than it is to not have enough. While the site by itself is not the end-all, it does have a lot of very useful information that might help you along your way to eating in a more healthful way.

If you get time, explore all the site has to offer. Most if not all of it appears to be free, so why not use it!

I did not find anything specific to type 2 diabetes or any other type of diabetes, but I may have missed it.

my plateThere is a lot of printable materials, as well, so if you are “old school” like me and like to have something in your hands to look at other than just your cell phone, you are in luck.

Be sure to check out the links included doing the quick quiz to determine your calorie needs for your age, sex, weight, height, and more.

After you are done with the quiz, click the link and it will take you to a page that will give you the basic amounts of each food group that you can have.

For example, my daily calories are 1800 so I can have 1 1/2 cups of whole fruits, 2 1/2 cups of veggies, 6 ounces of grains, 5 ounces of protein, and 3 cups of dairy.

It also recommends that I be physically active at least 2 1/2 hours every week. But it does say that we can be active our way. So just before I wrote this blog and did my video, I was out hand cutting brush and tree branches for about 1/2 hour. I worked up a sweat, so to me, this was a good workout!

I talk more about My Plate and the diabetes education class I am involved in.

  1. Thank you for introducing me to this simple widget found in MyPlate. These classes you’re taking seem to be very helpful. I am glad you decided to share your learnings with all of us. I have been able to follow a healthy diet for about 2 months. But having a calorie calculator will help me a lot!

    1. Thanks for visiting our site again, Abel. I am glad you found the simple widget useful. I am happy that what I am learning from my classes is helping others. If you are interested in a couple of free calories watching apps, I have found Lose It or My Fitness Pal to be very useful!

      To our health!

  2. Thank you for this wonderful article- My Plate is it any good for a type 2 diabetic? Both my parents are diabetic, hence the reason any bit of information on the topic is welcomed. If diabetes is not treated proper , it can cause kidney problems, problems with and eyes and prevent sores from curing fast.

    1. Thanks for visiting our site, Diana! I hope that your parents find useful information on My Plate. It can be so hard to watch ourselves and our loved ones suffer from this condition. There are so many things that can go wrong if we are not careful. In today’s (September 18) post and video, I talk about feeling like a failure when we are unable to do what we know we can do.

      To our health!
      Karin 🙂
