I receive a few different newsletters/blogs every day. Often, I just trash them, but once in a while, I come across something that is worthy of being shared. One of the most recent shareable blog posts was from Beachbody where I used to be a health and fitness coach. The post is about the 10 surprising health benefits of having a dog. Later in this post, I will share what those ten things are. Read on to learn more about man’s (and woman’s) best friend—the ever-faithful dog.
The naming of the D.O.G.
I don’t know if the creator God had this planned out in advance, but on my tired days, I sometimes switch the letters around and change the word “dog” into the word “God.” I don’t mean it to be sacrilegious at all, it just happens sometimes.
It is during those times when my mind wanders into the many ways that God and dogs are a lot alike. Here are just a few I thought of:

- Always happy to see you when you come home!
I have two dogs currently but I have had dogs my entire life.
The early years
Growing up, I lived on a farm and our dogs were pets, but they were also working dogs. The first dog I have a memory of was our dog Frisky. He was a terrier-type and was a great cattle dog. When it was time to milk the cows, we would tell Frisky to go get the cows and he would dart out into the pasture and herd all the cows back to the barn.
He seemed to love this work and was well-rewarded with a lot of praise and cuddles from us.
Our next dog was named Buffy. He wasn’t as good at herding the cows as Frisky was. In fact, sometimes he seemed downright afraid of the cows!
He was still a wonderful companion and would drop whatever it was that he was doing if you called him over to pet him.
I live in town now and my dogs don’t have the wide-open space to run like the dogs did when I was a kid. Still, they are excellent pets and can calm a person down when they are having a bad day.
Just one look into those fur-babies eyes and you melt! Well, I do anyway.

Several of these are highly significant for someone who struggles with type 2 diabetes.
The main thing
I think the main reason is just this simple thing, though. No matter how many people you have in your life that love and care about you, ultimately, dogs really are man’s and woman’s best friends and stand by us giving us comfort, peace, and someone who will always listen.
When you take those long walks with your faithful dog beside you there is no better feeling. Whether that is because of the chemicals being released because of the physical activity or because of your companion, the feeling is indescribable and one that is not matched by any other feeling.
Whether God had Dog planned or not, He sure knew what He was doing when He created the dog to be our helpers, companions, and friends.
